How to Retrieve Data From Your Drive

In order to complete this tutorial, you will need to perform a couple of preliminary steps:

1.    Install and open the application.

2.    Connect any external storage device to the computer.

Then follow the provided steps provided to recover a crashed or corrupted hard drive.

Step 1: Choose a Drive for Scanning. Before Windows Data Recovery can locate retrievable information, you have to inform the utility of what volume will be scanned. To do this, click on the volume name underneath Drive Recovery. When a selection has been made, it will be highlighted with a blue background.

Note: If the volume does not appear in the Drive Recovery list, an option is provided below this section for locating lost or deleted volumes on a drive.

Step 2: Perform the Scan. The scanning option in the right panel will not appear until a volume on your drive has been selected. Make certain the radial next to Normal has been chosen and then click on Scan Now.

(Note: An Advanced Scan can be performed if the Normal option does not find the needed data.)

After clicking on Scan Now, you will see a new window and can view the progress of the scan. To the right of the progress bar, a button is provided for aborting the scan and can be used any time you need to exit the scan. Just remember that the scan will have to be started from the beginning when it is aborted.

Step 3: Select Files. When the utility has finished scanning the volume on the drive, you will see a Classic Tree in the left panel. This makes it difficult sometimes to locate individual files and make custom recovery selections. We recommend clicking on the File Type List tab before making your recovery choices.

This will categorize the scan results by file type and format to make finding items easier.

With Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery – Home Edition, you have the option to recover all data on the corrupted or crashed drive or can choose specific items. If you want to recover the entire volume, check File Type(s) on the left of the utility and then use the ‘recover icon’ to finish.

Specific file types may be selected by checking the box next to their name in the tree view. You may also expand the folders to choose formats like docs, jpg images, etc.

Click on a format folder to see each individual file on the right of the utility. For example, if you click on gif underneath Graphics & Photos, every recoverable gif image will be shown. On the right, you can choose individual files by checking or unchecking the box for each item.

Certain files like photos or images can be previewed within the utility by clicking on the file name. In the example below, a gif image is being displayed in the top right of the utility window. This can be helpful if you are uncertain about the file whether it should be recovered.

Step 4: Finish Retrieving Your Data. Finally, you will need to initiate the recovery and choose a location to save your files. This is done by clicking on the Recover Icon, which can be found in the bottom right of the application. Then browse to a storage location and wait for Windows Data Recovery to complete the data retrieval.

Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery – Home Edition can be used to retrieve more than 300 types of data on your local drive or multiple types of external storage media including thumb drives, memory cards, flash cards, and hard drives. It scans the drive to locate data and then allows you to choose what is recovered.

Advanced scanning options along with a search feature are provided to make it easy to find exactly what you are looking for! To recover a crashed or corrupted hard drive, complete the steps below as discussed in this tutorial:

1.    Choose a drive for scanning.

2.    Perform the scan.
