Recover a Lost Partition Drive

How to Recover a Lost Partition Drive on a PC

Whether you have a hard drive, USB drive, SD card, or some other form of storage, one partition must be present for it to be usable. In most cases, the partitions have already been created, but sometimes a problem occurs where one might get lost or damaged. A partition is essentially a container that is used to manage a file storage system such as NTFS or FAT.

If something goes wrong with the drive or other storage media, the container (i.e. partition or volume) may become impossible to locate or inaccessible. In order to regain it, you need a utility designed for this specific purpose and this is where Stellar Phoenix Windows Recovery Home Edition comes into the picture. It can be used to recover a lost partition drive, individual files, or an entire drive in just a few minutes.

With Stellar Phoenix Windows Recovery Home Edition, you can quickly regain a lost or deleted volume by performing a few simple steps. The utility supports the following file systems: NTFS, FAT, or ExFAT. 4 Easy Steps for Recovering a Lost Partition Drive

Before getting started, make certain you have installed the appropriate version for your operating system. If you are to recover a lost partition drive on an external storage device, make sure it’s connected to your PC, then open the application on your Windows computer.

Step 1: Find the Lost Partition Drive. A lost drive will not automatically appear in the Drive Recovery options. You must first use Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery to locate the drive partition. To do so, you must click on Click Here to Search Lost Volumes.

Any lost partitions detected by the utility will be displayed in this section. To select the partition, click on it and it will be highlighted in blue.

Note: These same steps can be performed to regain a lost partition on an external drive. You will need to connect the drive to your PC before following the tutorial.

Step 2: Search the Volume. In the right panel, you will see an option labeled Search Lost Volume. Two choices are provided for searching the partition: Quick and Deep. For this tutorial, we will be performing a normal search. Select an option and then click on Search Lost Volume to begin this step.

Wait patiently for Windows Data Recovery to search the selected volume. This process may take a couple of minutes to complete, depending on the size of the lost partition. You may click on the abort button (red circle with X) at any time to stop this process.

Step 3: Scan the Partition for Recoverable Files. After the above steps have been performed, the lost volume will appear as a selection underneath Drive Recovery. Click on the partition to select it for scanning.

In the right panel, you will see Scan Now along with two scanning options: Normal and Advanced. A ‘Normal’ scan is the fastest method for recovering your data; however, if needed, you can perform an ‘Advanced’ scan to complete a deeper search of the lost volume.

Click on the radial next to the desired option and then click on Scan Now. For this tutorial, we will be performing a Normal scan.

Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery – Home will then scan the lost volume for any recoverable data. Please wait patiently for this process to complete.

Step 4: Recover the Lost Partition. After scanning has completed, you will be able to view the located files and either restore the entire partition or select specific files for recovery. To preview the files and/or recover everything, first click on the File Type List tab.

This will change the view to show the files based off type rather than storage location. Doing so makes it easier to preview files and complete custom selections. If everything needs to be recovered, check the checkbox next to File Type(s) in the left panel.

You can also expand the folders to view files and make individual selections. Use the checkboxes in the left panel to select certain file types or formats. Another option is to click on a specific format such as Text > xml in the example below and then check each individual file on the right side of the utility.

To finish the drive partition or file restore, click on the Red Floppy Disk in the bottom right corner of the window. It will be grayed out until a minimum of one file has been chosen for recovery. Once you have clicked on it, you will be able to configure where the retrieved data will be saved on the PC (or an external storage device).

A lost partition drive is not an issue when Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery – Home has been installed on your PC. Just open the utility and search for the lost volume. If it is an external storage device, make certain it’s connected to the computer, then follow these steps as shown in the tutorial:

1.    Find the lost partition drive.

2.    Search the volume.

3.    Scan the partition for recoverable files.

4.    Recover a lost partition drive.
